What is Food Allergy Anxiety?

Food allergy anxiety is the persistent fear and worry that people with food allergies experience around potential reactions. This goes far beyond normal caution and can significantly impact daily life.

It is not the same as generalized anxiety - which is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable anxiety about lots of different things.

Unlike generalized anxiety, allergy anxiety is specifically triggered by food-related situations - like eating out, reading labels, or being around allergens. It can cause physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, and panic attacks, even when no actual allergen is present.

Often it can look like checking and re-checking, hypervigilance (constantly being on high alert), overthinking, fear of having an allergic reaction.

This anxiety often leads to avoidance behaviours that can restrict social activities and makes us feel disconnected from what’s important to us,and can create a cycle where fear of reactions becomes as limiting as the allergy itself.

When we avoid all anxiety-provoking situations, we miss out on the opportunity to learn how to navigate these feelings, cultivate resilience, and increase confidence with allergy management.

But here’s the most important thing I want you to know – you are not alone, there is support.
